چکیده
1 The data contained in this paper is based on eldwork conducted by Rachel Nordlinger. She would like to express her gratitude to the Wambaya community for teaching her their language, especially to Molly Grueman, Mavis Hogan and Minnie Nimara. We are also grateful to Mar ia-Eugenia Ni~ no, Peter Sells and Jane Simpson for valuable comments on earlier versions of this paper. Of course, none of these people are to be held responsible for remaining errors and inadequacies. 2 In order to focus most clearly on the issue under discussion, the examples in this paper have been kept as simple as possible. Examples are either naturally-occurring, or were constructed and checked in elicitation sessions in order to determine the structure of the paradigms. For more detailed information about Wambaya see Nordlinger (in press). Evaluating a Crosslinguistic Grammar Resource: A Case Study of Wambaya
This paper evaluates the LinGO Grammar Matrix, a cross-linguistic resource for the development of precision broad coverage grammars, by applying it to the Australian language Wambaya. Despite large typological differences between Wambaya and the languages on which the development of the resource was based, the Grammar Matrix is found to provide a significant jump-start in the creation of the gr...
متن کاملMotivations for second position: Evidence from North-Central Australia
It has long been observed that many languages from all over the world require that certain grammatical categories (e.g., person, number, tense, modality) occur in the “second position” of a clause. Much of the research into second position has developed formal explanations for this recurring pattern, based on interactions between morphosyntax and phonology. In this article I explore how pragmat...
متن کاملDeep Lexical Acquisition of Type Properties in Low-resource Languages: A Case Study in Wambaya
We present a case study on applying common methods for the prediction of lexical properties to a low-resource language, namely Wambaya. Leveraging a small corpus leads to a typical high-precision, low-recall system; using the Web as a corpus has no utility for this language, but a machine learning approach seems to utilise the available resources most effectively. This motivates a semi-supervis...
متن کاملComparison of corneal endothelial cell density estimated with 2 noncontact specular microscopes.
PURPOSE To assess the repeatability of endothelial cell density (ECD) measurements by the EM-935 endothelial microscope and their agreement with those of the Konan-Noncon Robo SP 6000 (Noncon Robo) specular microscope. METHODS We assessed the agreement between automated and semiautomated methods of analysis of the EM-935 and the Noncon Robo by measuring ECD in 40 eyes of 20 healthy subjects a...
متن کاملRadical Non-Configurationality without Shuffle Operators: An Analysis of Wambaya
The word order facts of radically non-configurational languages pose a challenge to HPSG approaches which assume both that the surface order of words is the yield of the (tectogrammatical) tree and standard HPSG-style cancellation of valence lists. These languages allow discontinuous noun phrases, in which modifiers appear separated from their head nouns by arbitrarily many other words from the...
